Powder coating quality: Class 1 & Class 2 explained

Every Reynaers profile we fabricate is powder coated to Qualicoat's international durability specification. Here's what Class 1 and Class 2 actually mean, how the natural "Florida test" proves it, and why it matters for a facade that has to look good for decades.

What Qualicoat actually tests

Qualicoat is the international quality label for powder-coated aluminium used in construction. Licensed applicators — including the finishing lines Reynaers profiles pass through before fabrication — are independently audited, and every coating batch is tested against a published seal-of-approval specification.

It's a durability rating, not a colour or finish

Qualicoat classification has nothing to do with which colour or texture you choose — every RAL shade and structured finish is available in either class. It's purely a measure of how well the coating holds its appearance under years of real outdoor sun, heat and moisture.

  • Class 1 — the baseline architectural-grade specification, suitable for general and sheltered exterior use
  • Class 2 — a super-durable polyester powder formulated for higher UV and weathering resistance, aimed at facades, coastal properties and long, unbroken sun exposure
Real-world exposure

The Florida test

Rather than relying only on accelerated lab simulation, Qualicoat classes are proven with natural outdoor weathering exposure at a test station in South Florida — one of the most UV-intensive, humid climates used anywhere in the coatings industry as a real-world durability benchmark.

How the panels are exposed

Small coated aluminium test panels, produced alongside the same batch of powder used on production profiles, are mounted outdoors and left to weather under genuine sunlight for the full test period.

  • Panels are racked at 5° from horizontal, facing due south, to maximise direct solar exposure — per ISO 2810
  • An unexposed reference panel from the same batch is kept back for comparison
  • Class 1 panels are evaluated after 1 year of exposure
  • Class 2 panels are exposed for 3 years, with evaluations carried out annually along the way

What's measured

Two properties are tracked against the unexposed reference panel:

  • Gloss retention — measured with a gloss meter (ISO 2813 / equivalent ASTM D523 method) and expressed as a percentage of the original, unweathered gloss level
  • Colour change (ΔE) — how far the exposed colour has drifted from the original, measured instrumentally rather than by eye

Both properties must stay within Qualicoat's published limits for the coating to keep its class certification — Class 2's limits are the stricter of the two, and are checked at more points along the way.

On the exact numbers: Qualicoat's gloss-retention and colour-change (ΔE) limits are set out colour-by-colour in its published specification — darker and lighter shades weather differently, so the pass threshold isn't a single fixed figure. The percentages above are indicative of the general Class 1 / Class 2 requirement; ask us for the specific data sheet if you need exact figures for a chosen colour.
